From Soul to Voice: Marilyn & Billy--From the Heart!

Grammy-winning legends, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. with Forever 5th Dimension writer, actor Robert-Allan Arno

Hi Friends,
Please join me for a very special visit with Grammy-winning stars of The 5th Dimension, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr.  The dynamic duo discuss music, marriage, their faith and Obama, too!  Indeed, the essence of harmony & unity The 5th Dimension always stood for is "in the air" with recent history-making political events!  As a result, The 5th and Marilyn & Billy are seemingly more relevant than ever as evidenced by the huge fan response I receive from all over the world at my Blog-Magazine FOREVER 5th DIMENSION.  You'll find it on my MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/TheSoulofVoice.  So take a "beautiful balloon" ride there and enjoy this all-new Exclusive:
"Marilyn & Billy -- From the Heart!"
And as a special "bonus" for my voice-acting students, Marilyn & Billy provide a mini Master Class in vocal interpretation as part of the interview...this one's just for you!
Be blessed!
Robert

Responses to "Marilyn & Billy--From the Heart"

From Voice-artist & singer, Linette Navarrete:

Hi Robert!

I just read the interview you did with Marilyn & Billy and I loved it!!!  Especially when Billy was talking about singing from the heart and taking a word and giving it life.  The last few weeks I have been more observant and tuned in when other singers sing.  The majority of artists and bands today sing because they have the image and/or they fall into a formula.  However, there are still a few singers who can draw you close, give you goose bumps, cry and or hypnotize you with what is coming out of their soul.

The interview you did with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. was as if they were in your apartment.  It was intimate.

I am living proof of what Billy talked about and Robert of what you have taught me.  A few weeks ago,  I was at an open mic.  I could have sang any song I wanted to.  However, I knew that if sang any song I would be wasting my time and energy.  So I picked a song titled Bendita Tu Luz (Bless Your Light) by Mana because it was what I sang to my grandmother when she was in the ICU.  It is a song about love.  Preparing for the open mic, I read the lyrics several times and digged deeper within myself to wrap myself around the song and the words.  Robert,  I was so nervous the day of the open mic.   I was going to sing in Spanish to an audience that might not understand and also play the acoustic guitar.   Yet all along, my heart was telling me to sing this song and that people would get it.  I performed Bendita Tu Luz --remembering Billy's words--with feeling and emotion.  At the end of the song and during the night, I had people congratulating me.   I was so humbled.

Thanks Robert, for sharing this interview with us.

Much love,
Linette Navarrete

(Linette's recent bi-lingual bookings for campaigns like Caress have people like Gary Tallalian, producer of The ALMA Awards saying, "Linette's a voice with major 'personality'!".  >>We look forward to the next part of your exciting journey, Linette!)

From Number One Neo-Soul & Jazz Artist, Nhojj:

What a great interview-- it is really inspiring for me to hear the stories that helped shape our lives. Marilyn and Billy and The 5th Dimension are such beautiful artists. I love the pointers on song interpretation and I love what Marilyn and Billy continue to do with their gifts. Thank you, Robert once again for sharing artistry and art with us.

Love & Light,
Nhojj

(Nhojj's SOUL COMFORT featuring the hits, "Love," "Music,"  & "Peace & Blessings" is available at www.nhojj.com.  >>Nhojj, every time we work together you take "the method" 300% higher than I could have ever imagined!  No wonder you stole the show at the recent Barbados Music Awards!)

From Johnathan Buckson of The Stylistics
It is amazing how much of what our lives are today have so much to do with the kind of "positivity" and wholesomeness that we were privileged enough to receive from those who were in position to make a difference.
Reading your interview makes me understand all the more why I am such a fan of Marilyn & Billy!!
From Kathy Golick, Laura Branigan’s Other Half Entertainment
Greatly enjoyed your interview with Marilyn and Billy, Robert! The love and rapport that the three of you obviously share shines through. Marilyn and Billy are not only truly gifted artists, but very genuine and spiritual people, loving each other and what they do. They are beautiful people...and so are you!

Here are some 2008 reflections :

Debbie's 5 by 7
Legendary Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. with 5th Dimension writer, actor Robert-Allan Arno and No. 1 neo-Soul singer, Nhojj

Let me start with a joyful event that touched me most profoundly...truly a "greatest hits" moment of this past year! Here I am with the lovely Marilyn McCoo and the great Billy Davis, Jr. plus my good pal & student, number one neo-Soul singer Nhojj.  The multi-Grammy, Gold & Platinum record winning former 5th Dimension leads, Marilyn & Billy are celebrating 40 yrs. in show biz with their delightful MANY FACES OF LOVE CD (it's interactive!) and a charming live show on tour.  I caught them at the intimate CAFE CARLYLE this past May where they had the audience spellbound singing the music of their/our lives;  then I had a lengthy heart to soul talk with the dynamic duo afterward.  Their blessed message--to stand firm in being true to oneself & one's values--is an enlightened ethic that reflects their extreme faith & graceful walk through life...on stage and off.  How can we as voice-actors embody these qualities...from our interpretive to our self-marketing skills...from seeking representation, to garnering stellar audtions and bookings.  THE SOUL OF THE VOICE is what this concept is all about...keeping "God's poetry" in every aspect of our work.  As I continue creating my method's CD and workbook, I send you thoughts and prayers for your navigating your journey mindful of high standards yet with your burdens lifted, knowing everything is unfolding as it should...Amen!
God bless you all and please let me know how you're doing & what your "greatest hits" moment was this past year!!
with Love,
Robert

MR BONES SPEAKS FROM "THE EXPERIENCE OF THE SOUL"

Producer Extraordinaire, Bones Howe is forever linked with the stellar recording legacy of The 5th Dimension.  Just recently on radio, Marilyn McCoo discussed Mr. Bones' "awesome ears" for finding the group's hit material.  "We got used to the best writers...Bones spoiled us," Marilyn expressed in appreciation.  From 1956 to 1962, Howe earned a reputation as one of the top recording engineers in Hollywood, developing many of the multi-track studio recording techniques still in use today.  In the mid-sixties, he embarked on producing hit recordings with artists that included The Turtles, The Association, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77, Tom Waits and Elvis as well as his long run with The 5th Dimension ('67-'74).  Bones has produced more than twenty Gold and Platinum records and in 1969 was awarded a Grammy for his production of the Record of the Year: AQUARIUS/LET THE SUNSHINE IN by The 5th Dimension.

I've personally had the pleasure of knowing Bones over the years...from our numerous candid interviews to our co-compiling the hits for "The Ultimate 5th Dimension" CD, Bones is a man who truly loved the music.  Moreover, there's an uplifting thread running through Bones Howe's vision--from the songs he believed in to his witty take on being part of music history, to his kind mentoring of varied artists (myself included!) to this very day.  Here are golden philosophies Mr. Bones shares in his acclaimed Producer's Workshops...the same concepts apply in the navigating of your voiceacting career...take these in...they are from the master, who nicknamed these tips "Poor Bones' Almanac":

1. YOU NEVER SAY "NO" UNTIL YOU’RE TOO BUSY TO SAY "YES."

2.  IF YOU STAY HOME WAITING FOR THE PHONE TO RING ... IT WON'T.  SO MANY PEOPLE OUTSMART THEMSELVES BY NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY THAT COMES ALONG (INCLUDING WORKING FOR FREE), WHEN TIME IS THE THING THEY HAVE THE MOST OF.

3. THE PERSON THAT FAILS IS THE PERSON THAT GAVE UP ONE DAY TOO SOON.  FORTUNE DOES PLAY A PART (NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY); USUALLY IT JUST TAKES TIME, COMMITMENT, AND PATIENCE; OFTEN IT JUST SUDDENLY HAPPENS AND YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE IT AND BE READY TO DELIVER.

4.  IF YOU CAN STAY IN THE BIZ FOR 10 YEARS, YOU WILL BE MAKING A GOOD LIVING IN IT – BUT PROBABLY NOT DOING WHAT YOU THOUGHT...

5.  KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN.  IT’S SOOOO EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP IN THE POLITICS OF THE BUSINESS AND ITS  CRAZINESS . REMEMBER IT’S PASSION FOR THE ART THAT GOT YOU INTO THIS. WHEN THE BUSINESS MAKES YOU CRAZY, GO WRITE .. OR PRACTICE.. OR LISTEN TO A SYMPHONY.

REMEMBER, THE REWARD FOR SUCCESS IS THAT YOU GET TO DO IT AGAIN !!!

Friends, I find this Daily Bible Verse most enlightening...think about the concepts of "well done" and "success"..click the headline above ("From Soul to Voice") to see the complete verse.  Wishing you a Fall Season of peaceful yet adventurous blessings...keep in touch...let's look forward!!!

The Daily Bible Verse : Email Edition
July 2nd, 2008
Matthew 25:21
NIV "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'"
KJV His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
NASB "His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.'"
Matthew 25:21

Commentary

The story of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30) is about the kingdom of heaven (25:14), but it offers an important lesson about success. God measures our success not by what we have, but by what we do with what we have-for all that we have is a gift from Him. We are really only managers to whom He has entrusted resources and responsibilities. The key thing He looks for is faithfulness (25:21, 23), doing what we can to obey and honor Him with whatever He has given us. We may or may not be "successful" as our culture measures success, in terms of wealth, prestige, power, or fame. In the long run that hardly matters. What counts is whether we have faithfully served God with what He has entrusted to us.

Word in life study Bible . 1997, c1996

Summer Reflections...August 9:  Well it's officially my birthday and I'm ready to embark on my annual August sabbatical:

"I WILL SING 'GETTING SOME FUN OUT OF LIFE,' ONE OF MY FAVORITE LESTER/BILLIE TUNES, ESPECIALLY FOR YOU...HAVE A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY!"--this was a special message I received from the luminous Bonnie Bowden, the Featured Artist on this page.  The former lead of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77, Bonnie's interpretations of "Hey, Look at the Sun," "The Trouble w. Hello is Goodbye" & "Funny You Should Say That" are world-wide beloved classics...her new recordings are just as head-turning!  The song she'll be singing in my honor at the San Jose Jazz Festival reminds us all of the genius of joy...take time for it, no matter what's goin' on...LOL!   In other words, God wants his children to be happy!Smile  I know my friend & "student", the No. 1 neo-soul singer, Nhojj agrees...his nickname is Genius of Joy!  And this just in:   our very own Linette has booked AGAIN, 2 more major spots including a high profile Burlington Coat Factory TV VO...Linette's success is based on her "can-do essence"...always encased in a joyful yet respectful, God-honoring spirit...see friends, there's a theme here!  Also a shout-out to "Radio Deb"-- thanks for your thoughtful blown glass starfish, a sunny symbolic work from one of New England's top fire and color inspired artisans.  Brenda, I appreciate your checking in, too--ever witty & funny!  Be blessed people...and "See you in September!"

Here's a reprint of our mid-winter message, by request!

OK...so I'm trying to "keep on keepin' on" where the writing of my book, my memoir, my inspirationally-based workbook thing is concerned yet there are all these distractions...and so many of them are about writing other things...CD reviews...encouraging e-mails to multi-friends with the flu...tips for a groovy grad doing her first photo session (kudos, dear Linette!)...well, you know what...everything unfolds as it should!  In his last private journal entry, the heroic Dr. Martin Luther King talked of said "distractions"--"What perfect line of poetry never got put to paper because of a knock at the door?"--I respectfully paraphrase.  Certainly Dr. King showed the true test of a man's greatness is showing grace under "distraction"... yet his point is ingeniously paradoxical in that there really are no distractions.  Some call it "in God's time."  Whether you're writing a book and have to break to compose an e-mail; whether you have to announce yet are about to lose your voice due to a cold...ya gotta let go...don't force the flow.  And that doesn't mean give up.  Distractions are really motivators.  For instance, my friend Deb Neuman who hosts the popular BACK TO BUSINESS radio show in Maine used the "show must go on" endorphin rush to beat the odds and get her weekly show in the can despite a snowstorm AND the flu...that SMGO effect for we actors, singers and yes, voice-actors is often more healing than staying in bed.  Yet the flip is, when it's time to stop, heal and re-charge...you STOP.  It's a balancing act of sorts.  Indeed, working under less than favorable conditions, even in our bodies, is the challenge that makes us stonger for the proverbial long run.

Do you keep lists?...ever checked one that went astray... you find it on the floor behind your desk weeks later...didn't you get everything that was truly important done?
You may be thinking, Robert's somewhat going all over the place with this one...well, that's life....all over the place!  But now with a touch of focus and "by popular request," here's a new list to keep you upbeat...to embrace your gifts...keep then honed....and then of course, to help you get out there:

l.  Work with your voice "out" of voice-over.  Phone bank for your favorite canditate (I did and loved it and Blogged about it on Senator Obama's website!).  Sing some songs (remembering to tongue-stretch in advance!). It may seem silly, but I just did my old lounge act "alone and acapella" (wouldn't that make an odd book title!) and it was a blast plus I reminded myself of utilizing my "true vocal tone" per Roger Love's technique.

2.  Consider writing what the great inspirational author Dan Wakefield calls a spiritual auto-biography.  I'll give it a different spin for ya...  Can you write your Bio briefly and objectively...as if you were your own PR agent...as if you were gonna feature it on your own web page.  Is there a common thread...a deeper sense of duty that appears....even a failure that turned triumphant.  Kathleen Turner (whose done tons of VO's, too) just talked (deeply!) on NPR of what a re-defining experience writing her memoir (the acclaimed "Send Yourself Roses") was.  Celebrity or not, YOU ARE entitled to write your auto-biography in one way, shape or form...truly enlightening...healing...often self re-configuring!

3.  Check in with New York City...a museum, a cafe coffee with a creative spirit (aka kooky friend...but no energy drainers!)...a cabaret/jazz club (I recently went to see the beguiling chanteuse, Laurel Masse formerly of The Manhattan Transfer at The Metropolitan Room AND the charismatic Take 6 at The Blue Note back to back even though I supposedly had "things to do").  The famed The Artist's Way alludes to this concept, by the way, as taking yourself on an "artist's date!"...but I think it's nice to share the experience with someone artistically astute, as well!
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention places of worship...and I'm always interested in knowing of your special places, in this regard, too.  I find such "intimate peace" and meditative focus amidst the grandeur of The Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 112th and Amsterdam...can you believe I just found out my maternal Grandmother, Theresa Arnold, known as a "maverick" in her day, would journey from the Bronx to this historic place many decades ago...history, indeed!  Also, St. Malachy's--The Actors' Chapel at W. 49th has such an incandescent glow...providing such a joyful experience.

4.  Check in with the media, too...it's Black History Month, for instance...the golden, poised voice-overs filled with pride of heritage that narrate shows like  PBS's series on African-American genealogy (AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES-2*) are spine-tingling...how can you put your unique brand of soul into your voice (aka "The Soul of the Voice," of course!)?  And yes, it's American Idol time again...be the "teacher" and "grade" the contestants...who has the "it factor"...who can act a song...who connects to "the fourth wall" and sings to somebody?

5.  Like our energetic Linette, treat yourself to a photo session.  (I recommend John Puric at 1-888-HEADSHOT)  What popular actor has a look or style similar to yourself?  Can you emulate one of their photo sessions...in your way, of course.  Can you look into the camera as a "can do" actor who knows your worth...can you find the effortlessness we strive for on mic and let your soul shine through.  The photo shoot "exercise" takes you out of the voice-over realm specifically but is part of your entire marketing mix.  In fact, that's my point.  ALL of the above is relative.  Motivational.  Keeps you "unstuck"...gives your craft layers...so when you have to do those CD Demo mailings...you are re-invigorated...and not aprehensive or depressed.

6.  This number is YOUR suggestion.  I want to hear from each of you...e-mail me, friends....and I'll post the results.  Let's keep our "circle of good" alive...it's the type of practical yet uplifting sharing that makes being an actor an experience that's transcendent...and in my book, that's a Godly good place to create from.

Peace, love, prayers,

Robert

from Deb Neuman 2/17...

"Ahh yes, the SMGO...I did record my BACK TO BUSINESS radio show this week in spite of all the odds.  I thought for a moment about not making the show and running a repeat--but how could I NOT make the show...it's just how we performers are!  So I interviewed the guests by phone due to the snowstorm and physically rallied through the flu.  Since my voice was shaky including the sensitive mic picking up an occasional cough or sniffle, I chose to let the audience in but without apology, more of 'Funny, this is what's going on,'...making that connection with them not only as a host but as a person...with imperfections.
It felt really good to make that show.  It was important to myself--more than anyone else--that I can do this, even in less than optimal circumstances.  Afterwards, I STOPPED to recover...so THE (next) SHOW WILL GO ON, too!"

"So nice of you to join us from Maine, Deb...I enjoy your stream of consciousness!"

From Linette Navarrete, 2/19...

"Recently, a severe rain caused lots of damage  in my apartment...how stressful.  However, I realize that the things that got ruined were material and nothing else.  And despite this incident, I will NOT cancel my head shot appointment.  I've been looking forward to this!  The "distractions" Dr. King wrote of which you mention, Robert, make sense.  I have to move forward despite the obstacles, aka the SMGO!  I also think the distractions are like picking and choosing your battles.  I've decided to focus on the important people and things that count.  Not the situation where someone bumps you on the street and doesn't apologize.  My time is now.  I am focusing my energy on positive outcomes.
You know, the day of the Caress audition I was not feeling well.  Before going in the booth, I said to myself, 'I want to book this audition...I want it, I want it, I want it!'  Someone must have heard me, because I got it!"

Robert responds...

"Your insights, Linette, have your trademark 'grounded sensibility plus winning fire' that make us always root for your prayers to be answered!"

>>Note that VoiceACTions grad, Linette works in both the Anglo and Latin markets.  While gifted in voicing Commercials, Promos, Award show reads and characters, Linette's Caress booking was a detailed bi-lingual Industial chock full of statistics!  So Linette has now added yet another voice-over genre to her dynamic repertoire!

From Lauren Hali, 2/20...

I feel like we live in a parallel universe.  Your blog entries seem to speak to whatever it is that I'm experiencing at the time...the extent of your insight amazes me.  I have been very distracted with work and wedding planning (which feels like a job in itself sometimes) and very much need the "SMGO" endorphin.  It's reassuring to be reminded that I'm not alone and we all have to juggle life's challenges.  Thank you for that.

And thank you so very much for including me in the Select Casting guide.  I am honored to have my name associated with you, the other Voice-Actions grads and the likes of Marilyn McCoo and The 5th Dimension.  It's all very exciting.

Robert Responds...

"Look in the dictionary and "Lauren" is defined as class with a Capitol C...with a heart of Leonine gold, to boot!  You make a big impression wherever you go, Lauren.  Prediction:  MORE BOOKINGS...many more!!!  The biz needs young, smart & gifted people just like you!"

From Nhojj, 2/22...

"Beautiful, true words.  Yes, it's definitely a 'balancing act' and a constant exercise is listening to your spirit for guidance when life gets mixed up.  Thank you, Robert for the reminder."

Robert responds...

"'Listening to your spirit' can have so many meanings per our individual choices--our Faith.  You remind me it's yet another definition of 'The Soul of the Voice,' too.  Thank YOU, good Nhojj!!"

>>#1 Neo-Soul artist, Nhojj's brand of elegant smoothness has been described as healing, meditative, melodic...in a class with Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.  His newest CD, SOUL COMFORT features the hits, "Music," "Spring Rain," and "Doing M' Thing."  Visit "The Genius of Joy" at www.nhojj.com

From Super Grads to Gifted Teens--2007 in Review!

It's been a "full circle" year!  You're invited to share reflections of my work with my thrilling VoiceACTions grads on this page.  Success is already on the horizon for these winning actors who embody the concept of "the soul of the voice" in their style and ethic.  (In fact as I'm writing this, grad Linette Navarrete just booked major work for Caress plus Lauren Hali already landed an amusingly hip promo for Fuse...brava to both!)  May I give wholehearted thanks to Agents Eileen Haves, Jason Sassportas and Manager Suzy Friedman for their invigorating appearances at our grad forums and for all the support and validation they've since provided.  Our demo producer, too is one in a million...Mr. Phil Lee.  I also loved working with the brilliant Jack & Jill teens...check out the log of that super event!  And appearing at JOHN JAY COLLEGE is always a classy experience...who knows where I'll be appearing in '08...LOL!  My connecting this past year with lovely songbird Bonnie Bowden, former lead singer of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 (you hear her singing about "Birdland" right now!) was a blast...what a doll...what an incredible new CD available at her site, the retro-nouveau YESTERDAYS...and for me to get to do liners for another 5th Dimension project, SOUL & INSPIRATION, featuring The Lost 5th Album was a "channeling experience"...meaning my musings on these magical lost tunes literally came thru me... I'm so pleased this extraordinary project is a surprise retro hit of 'O7!  (In fact, you can order it right now as a "holiday treat"...details to the right!)  Special thanks to Rob Santos at Sony BMG, Gordon Anderson at Collectors' Choice and Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.--my heroes, whose recent kind words can be found on the left of this page!  Finally, the loss of my mentor, Rev. Dr. Melvin C. Walker this summer caused an ache that only Heaven could heal...and indeed, since this great man known as The Gospel Ambassador passed, many miraculous blessings have been bestowed upon myself and my loved ones.  In fact, I'm on my way to "The City of Brotherly Love" to meet my new brother, Rev. Walker's son Pastor Steven Walker, via attending the annual No Limits Performing Arts Ministry Christmas Extravaganza he produces at the prestigious Kimmel Center.  Alas, Rev. Melvin Walker always taught us to embrace the "gift of pro-activity" and I can look forward to a bright and adventurous New Year because of his Guardian Angelic influence in so many areas...you shall see...but right now the proverbial "details upcoming" is in order...for it's time to take a look back...before embarking on 2008...ENJOY!

Many Blessings to you & yours,

Robert

Fall '07 Log:

After 15 years of teaching voice-acting, the journey for me at present is sweeter than ever...I commend you, my 5 gifted grads who have so diligently commited to a Master Series and private lessons leading to some of the most head-turning, cutting-edge Demos I've had the pleasure of producing...so now is THE TIME to put it all together and get out there...in New York, New York, still the biggest commercial market in the country!  And incorporating all the up-to-the-minute changes in the biz as well!  Before I address some of your savvy questions, let me thank you all for your appearance this past Wednesday.  It was thrilling to have a trust factor and "unconditional vibe" in the room that supported your honest, even emotional reactions toward self-marketing!  So to Lauren, Linette, Brenda, Barbara...(Welcome Back!) and April...a toast to you, your talent, kindess and determination!

And may I also acknowledge my appearance at The Jack and Jill event this past Saturday, Oct. 13th...you'll see some lovely photos reflecting the warm and enthusiastic spirit of this gifted, charming group of teens at the slide show, below right.  Our goal for the evening was to embrace the qualities of the "winning voice" with focus on today's media...on this night Kharin, Jasmine, Travis and my co-host, Wesley WERE voice-actors!  You can read more about this exhilerating event as you scroll down...in short, the lessons learned with such open hearts are not just for young "newcomers" to the voice-acting experience, but for us all!

Some questions after Week One of The Grad Master Series...

 1.  Lauren asks some important questions about getting vocally tuned up, especially when our daily lives are so hectic.  Remember to keep hydrated, never to shout, get proper rest and avoid heavy dairy.  The morning of an audition (even if you're first going to your "regular" job and will be running out to audition at lunch)...don't talk right away...hum...and then gently start that larynx-freeing tongue stretching...1--2--3...easy...keep this up here and there (don't let your co-workers see!) until you get to the audition's waiting area.  No need to whisper before the audition...in fact, that's not cool vocally at all.  If you grab Roger Love's SET YOUR VOICE FREE (see book list)...you can use his scales via the CD provided.

2.  Then Lauren is generous in sharing common directions she gets at auditions, like the ones she's been going to for hip venues like Fuse TV (where she booked--congrats!).  "More Energy!"..."More Excitment!"..."Pick up the Pace!"..."Don't do so much...flatten it out!"  As Casting Director Judy Keller says...take these and filter them through your "actor's computer"...meaning if you've prepared properly, you found the one person you're talking to...so make a quick shift upon the direction and figure out WHY you'd be talking to that person with more energy, excitement, faster...or contrarily, in a more laid back manner.  You stick to your original prep but ADD to your choices with the direction given.  Frankly, even your original choices are "in your heart" once you slate and begin speaking after the "moment before"...yes, you are working from soul to voice...so adding a more superficial direction should be easy to breathe into...make it make sense for you...it's like a muscle...the more you get used to absorbing and incorporating direction, the easier it is to process and do.  But again, remember to do your work in the waiting room...it's hard to take superficial direction (and often there's no time for Casting to give anything else) if you haven't done the deep work in the waiting room.

3.  Linette has encountered the answer to the question, "So once you receive my Demo CD, how should I follow up?" with "Don't worry, if we like it, you'll hear from us."...This is on the phone when your'e "pitching" your Demo to an Agent's assistant before mailing it out.  The "Don't call us, we'll call you" line should not be daunting...it's likely true...but if your conversation is running smoothly from the start (re:  knowing the "script" on your Demo and "selling it" to the assistant with ease and charm) you should be able to say..."You've been so nice...can I check in with you in a week or so to follow up if I don't hear from your office."...Again, it's all practice...the more times you push yourself to get on the phone, the easier it will be.  And if someone is really "having a rotten day"...forget their office for a while and try back in a month...you'll probably get another assistant all together or luckily even the Agent themselves (wooh...could you handle that prospect...YES!)

4.  Brenda asks about rate negotiations through an Agent since we talked a lot about negotiating for yourself without an Agent in class.  It's easy when an Agent sends you out...they take care of ALL the money matters and when they get paid...yes, they get paid...they take their 10%...an industry standard...and cut you a check for the rest!  Simple!

Friends, come to Full House at 6:30 on the 10th...and be confident...you are there to meet a hip and kind NYC Agent...and celebrate your artistry "live" at an audition, then you'll be interviewed and your hot Demo will be played...this is all individual...then we'll all come back for a group Q & A.  So study the Voice-Actions method...the one I just gave you...and practice with that People Magazine copy and others...Jason will have new, surprise copy for you...enjoy the ride!  Know YOU deserve success!

Blessings...many,

Robert

A Special Salute to the Jack and Jill TeensSmile

Friends, our voice-acting journey this past Saturday evening was certainly a special one because each participant brought a spirit of enthusiasm, courage and commitment to the forum.  To those of you from your select group who may be  "tuning in" as well as to those "other good actors" reading this, the lessons edified at our seminar have not only to do with voice-acting in the media but can apply to many areas of growth and mastery...Let's review...

A.  As Oprah advises, "Always compete with only yourself!"

B.  As Motown Founder, Berry Gordy notes, "Like the early, teenage Supremes, never be ashamed to get up and perform!"...I add, back it by craft and I'm sure Mr. Gordy agrees!

C.  Maya Angelou as taught by her poetry mentor, Miss Flowers reminds us to "Love the word...the feel of it on our tongue...don't be afraid to pronounce it...to savor it!"

D.  Legendary Eartha Kitt exclaims or rather purrs, "If you're not nervous, you might as well be dead!"...meaning nervousness shows you're concerned about your performance...

E.  BUT I remind you that technique...especially talking to ONE person, whether giving a speech before many or doing a commercial voice-over, keeps you focused to surpass that nervous energy!  The respected  Michael Shurtleff mentions this in his aptly titled book, AUDITION...you may one day encounter more of his tips if you fully pursue an acting career.  Furthermore, Roger Love, who coaches American Idol singers, provides an exciting method in his book, SET YOUR VOICE FREE...we actually used a few of his breathing and vocal exercises in our seminar!

F.  And last but certainly not least,  Dr. King's indelible message of Unconditional Love is one that has greatly influenced my VoiceACTions/The Soul of the Voice Master Classes and Seminars...as translated to voice-acting, give that full support to your fellow actor...embrace his or her work...have something POSITIVE to say...and you'll receive the gift back in not negatively judging but feeling accomplishment from the efforts of YOUR performance!

On your journey, continue to behold the media with "educated ears"...remember, those who you admire for their speech skills probably have the same winning attributes YOUR own unique voice possesses!

Once again, many thanks to the Essex-Hudson Chapter of the Jack and Jill group...I forsee not only great futures for each of you, Kharin, Jasmine, Travis and Wesley...but achievments where your stellar vocal poise will be a major part of your impressive image!Star

Very Best Wishes & Many Blessings,

Robert

Reveiw of Agent Nite for Grad Students & a Look Forward

ALL of you impressed Jason with your unique Demos and winning interview skills.  Even if you think you said something that could have been pre-scripted more smoothly...that's not too bad...just "fix it" for the next time.

What I will say is it's "actor's human nature" to freak at a live audition and forget after you slate to have that all-important MOMENT BEFORE...which reminds you to talk to ONE PERSON.  Getting slick, going exterior, faking even a supposed "real attitude" does not cut it in the wash....

A great grounding exercise is to make like a tree...really...and "root yourself"...then feel a strong breeze and let your legs, knees, arms, hands, shoulders, neck and head gently be swayed...but keep your roots strong!  Sounds rather oblique but it's a great somatic exercise (processing your emotions thru the body) in how not to be thrown at an audition...

NUFF SAID...we will have a half hour before Suzy, the Manager arrives to apply this technique so your auditions will come from a deeper place...yes, please arrive at 6 PM!

FINAL NOTE>>>Kudos to Linette for attending ACTOR FEST and knowing her "script" and making connections there.  We'd love to hear a mini report next class.  And what have you done on your "TO DO" list since we last met???  LOLWink

Blessings & a Kindly Nudge,

Robert

Final Forum Review...Nov. 7

Our final post-Boot Camp forum was charming & blessed in many ways.  But it's best to summarize some serious, key points:

1.  Our special guest Manager reminded all to put passion in your auditions...it's a great way of saying "don't be afraid to focus and dig in" via communicating with that all-important one person...keep the ENERGY up because you KNOW you have done the prep via the layered VoiceACTions method and can trust it's there for you.

2.  Our guest also reminded us of dress, etiquette and networking "codes" in the voiceover biz...she underscored not to compromise our class and dignity as we navigate through the largest commercial market in the country, if not the world...ya know, the ole "competing with yourself" routine applies here...know your talent, your worth...and follow your impeccable instincts.  She also cautioned to not burn your bridges in her candid sharing of eye-opening tales of actors who are so offensive in everything from hygiene to their holier than thou, presumptuous attitudes, that they are now only relegated to "bottom feeder" VO work...you'd be surprised at how audacious to the inappropriate extreme some actors are...some may be closer than you think!  Beware of these negative souls who bite the hand that feeds them...there are consequences in an often "one chance" business.  In other words, putting it bluntly, never p*ss off busy, important people who go out of their way for you because they believe in your talent.  Their "belief" can be short-lived in this fast-paced arena!
And P.S...Check your messages every hour even if the biz is "slow"...the time you forget to check is often when an Agent is frantically trying to reach you!

3.  On the phone...engage that Agent's assisitant...and "assist" him/her in offering to send in your Demo!Wink

4.  In a meeting...say "yes"...know your "biographical script"....but again, keep charmingly connected to the Agent.

5.  Don't get lonely....get BACK STAGE weekly...take even a quick Improv class...get to your sacred VO desk and make those phone calls;   then send mailings of all-important cover letters as well as Demos and eventually include a solid photo and theatrical resume affixed to the photo's back.  Yes, it's nice to meet Agents and Managers at our forums, but go out and make other connections...feel a part of the flow of the city...and the biz...know you deserve to work.

6.  What more can I say...if you need me, call me (but I want to hear you're being pro-active!)...and until then, may I leave each one of you with an adjective or five!:

Linette...Courage, down-to-earth, cutting-edge..."All Heart...with a Kick"

April...Savvy, de-constructed, re-constructed, layered..."Wonder Woman"

Barbara...Glowing, Digging in & Discovering, Bold..."People Want to Know You"

Lauren..Class, Focus, Learning to Play (it's acting!)..."Today's Crystalline Discovery"

Brenda...Warm & Engaging, Funny, Soulful..."A Smarter Kind of Now"

Now don't y'all want to share those unique, stellarStar qualities...on the airwaves...let it flow!

God bless you...the winners,

Warm Regards,

Robert

Spring Master Series' Blog

  SATURDAY MASTER SERIES' WEDNESDAY CHECK-IN:

July18...I'm thinking what a nice studio ambiance was created during both your final recording sessions today...you--acting, me--directing, Phil--producing...everyone happy & feeling accomplished...this is the type of harmonious team work that goes on when you really book these things...and you will!
--Brenda, your work is so comedic and brave and now...I can't wait to dig into the editing and give the pieces like the Penny's Salon their proper "rhythmic haircuts!"
--April, "Samantha Stevens" as played by Nicole Kidman is so apt...you created magic each time up...effortless...channeling...focused & charming...I will edit in the same groove!
Brenda, you were right...I am missing you two already...but look forward to "spending time with you" in the editing room on Aug. 1st and again approx. a month from then for our Agent Meeting/Biz of the Biz Intensive...and we'll be in touch of course, along the way...
You are both angels and I am honored to know and work with such dynamic, classy and caring women as you two...God is good!

My Unconditional Love, Always...

Robert

July 11...Well, well, well...can you see why less brave souls than you, April & Brenda, may freak in the recording booth...men, women, supposed pros have indeed had melt-downs...but not you two!  Now you truly know why doing the layers of interpretive work (a.k.a. the acting choices) with the copy is so important...because you must trust your actor's prep while you're BUSY working to the music rhythms, taking some very "direct direction," adjusting your sound to the mic position as well as the mood, being called to "match" while "punching in" an important phrase...whooh!

I can not wait to re-mix all your pieces...but before that, we have one more go at it...and now that you've had your baptism in the VO studio...it's even smoother sailing ahead.  You two are fascinating in a studio situation in that your sound styles and manners of working ("craft") are different...and that is refreshing for me...to let me challenge you and for you to meet me every step of the way with your own special brand of "professional uniqueness"-- April & Brenda, this is something for you to be proud of.  Think of the variety of spots you recorded today...who could do them better than you?  And to get validation from a pro like the great Phil Lee is icing on the VO cake!

'Nuff said...have a "live your life" week...gloss over your pieces...and come back ready to play hard again...to win!  Remember, "on the air" for the Fall '07 is no longer a dream but a reality!

Warmest Regards & Showers of Blessings,

Robert

 Trilogy/Three...
June 27--Summer Rainstorm after today's Voice-over "Boot Camp" means "Showers of Blessings" on your upcoming Demo recording sessions, April & Brenda!!...we have worked over 10 plus lessons not just toward the recordings but to give you a foundation for all those upcoming auditions & bookings...I love the perfect 6 we've picked for each of you...heads will turn upon listening!!!

1.  Just gloss over your selected 'greatest hits'...from the acting* standpoint...DO NOT OVER-READ...let's reach our peak in the studio!!

2.  Keep hydrated and do the larynx-freeing tongue stretching and humming exercises...think of the specific vocal tones and textures each piece will reflect...

3.  Practice other copy here & there to keep vocally & conceptually limber....

Then, like the rainstorm
Wash it all away....
and trust...
it will be there for you
on "the day"
as we create new moments
in the studio....

Phil and I can't wait to create with you on the 11th & 18th...keep in touch if you have any questions before we meet in studio...

Let's make a "Joyful Noise,"
 Robert
*see June 13 entry

June 13--Trilogy/Two--Before I address today's wonderous progressions...a little note to my recent grads who I had the pleasure of just touching base with...Linette, Lauren & Dan...if you're checking out the blog for extra support it goes new to old and I recommend starting with the first or second entry...so keep scrolling dear friends!

And now to Brenda & April...notice how direct I was able to be with you today...this is really the way it is at auditions & bookings...and you kept your actor's balance and stamina through whatever was thrown at you....fascintating variations on your core voice-over style...in fact, we were able to ULTRA fine tune what spots in certain categories fit best for you in the context of the "jigsaw" of the Demo...the good news is we have more than enough...and I am going to have so much fun re-categorizing for you...as we find your greatest hits on the 27th...enjoy the week off...the homework...and take a peak at your best spots...and look at them more from the acting standpoint...environment, who are you talking to...thematics.....go back to Shurtleff's guideposts...we want those spots fresh in the studio...approaching them at different angles each time always helps...

Brenda...Lime Coke, Drug-Free, Ode to Kitt and the Med Instructional were striking...the mix of flow/pause was a running tech theme...
April...The mid-town bus damsel, the Bacall, the sweet-tart 'tude of Ocean Spray & so many more had that running theme of finding a vocal and acting tone and trusting the nuances...

I can not wait to get into the studio with you both...but first...the week off...Trilogy 3...and my choosing the sizzling music selections pre-our 2 recording sessions...so Brenda & April, here's to "keeping"...

Keeping

the humor
the humanity
the artistry
the music
the love
compassion--passion
my God
in my voice
from the soul.

Written just for you-- Blessings,

 Robert

June 6--Trilogy/One--The process of your going deeper into the interpretive work while fine-tuning via finding applicable vocal tones plus underscoring inherent copy rhythms & word parallels was ultra-layered today! (Whew, did you realize you did all that?!)  You met me every step of the journey as extremely joyful, competent voice-actors...and weren't your "Hermans" revelational (to those peaking in, we're not telling you who or what Herman is!!)...
Finding your unique themes & variations amid the appropriate cutting-edge copy selections will make for a head-turning "greatest hits" Demo for each of you...enjoy your homework as I will certainly enjoy preparing for next week...
Brenda & April-- you are both truly Solid Gold,
Robert
P.S.  Keep audio-visualizing your demos as the dream naturally unfolds!!

Memorial Day Musings----A time for reflection for many reasons and the dawning of the...
Summer of 2007...personally, the lead-up to my 50th in August...a feeling of gratitude that my students 4ever raise the bar in the way they challenge themselves like you, my current select voice-actors who have grown so much (as you can review via our weekly Blog below!)...I think of a rather obscure 5th Dimension song (don't I always!) that both Marilyn & Billy have loved to perform, "Leave a Little Room (And Start Again)"...over the years it's become a soft-voiced yet mighty mantra of mine.  So 'nuff said, no further talk today...just trust that your actor's neuro-memory will keep all you've learned alive in every fiber of your being...gently look at your homework...and let's dig back in for our trilogy of privates starting June 6th...rested, ripe n' ready to artistically surpass yourselves...you'll see, the proverbial "break to live our lives" is a refreshing blessing...leavin' a little room, then we start again, taking it to a higher place...yes!!!  Remember, I want you all to be "on the air" by Fall!!
Warm Regards & Prayers for all, Robert

For May 9:  Well, "Dreamgirls," our final Master Class was chock full of "ordinary miracles!"  First, may I mention how honored I am that all of you were comfortable in sharing very personal and compelling stories...you are all so pro-active...you used your histories never to wallow but as a launch pad to courageously go where you've never gone before...as artists and human beings.  April, we send you and yours special prayers this week and thank you for your "show goes on" selfless example...your convicted expression on mic was a true tribute to your beloved Grandmother.  Brenda, your evolution is heartwarming and we are all so proud of your remarkable "Soul of the Voice" sunny strength.  And Barbara, we'd all pay lots for you to entertain us...whether you're "bringing us in" warmly narrating an audio book or doing stand up in a comedy club as "Flo" or yourself!!  I respect all of you for preparing so hard for your "finals"...you can't fake the levels of richness you brought to your pieces.  If only we could bring half of that prep to our "real" auditions...God bless that waiting room!

And don't forget the "Swing with Sinatra" application to your promo work for WETA which brought a sense of movement, variation and even wonder to your interpretations!  Plus in the "leave 'em wanting more Dept.," did you realize you all ended with "pathos" in your political spots?  It's that "secret tender emotion" that made for the POWER of your "announce mode."

Please keep checking in with our friend, Mr. Shurtleff plus have fun with your homework...don't get rusty just 'cause we're moving into the "private sector."  Then again, live your lives, too!  As noted, I'm excited about coordinating your individual lessons...like The 5th Dimension members, you are all so diverse...your "solo flights" can not be interchanged!  Finally, I'd like you to think about that cosmetics company, "Incandescent, Luminous & Radiant, Inc.!!!"  See y'all Saturday!

With Deep Appreciation,

Robert

For May 2:  I'm sitting here laughing, thinking of your phenomenal character work in last class...
Barbara's "Flo," April's "Flower Child Marilyn," & Brenda's "Wendy" are a different kind of "Dreamgirls," indeed!!  Then there were your on-camera experiences...this was an extremely advanced situation and you met the scenario with grace...I'm in awe.  I have more good things to say...but first this commercial message for HOMEWORK!!.........

  l.  Keep checking in with Shurtleff and keep feeling part of the acting community!  Beguiling is the word I used to describe Barbara's presentation from Shurtleff last class...next class, it's Brenda's turn!

  2. Think of your favorite singers this week...how do they tell a good story...what are the elements that make for their particular brand of magic?  We'll be checking out Sinatra's vibe next class and then applying his charisma to our own VO class work (surprise copy!)...can you make it swing?...a l'il jazz 'n snazz!!

  3.  I'm already looking forward to how each of you will spin your Finals...April, you are forever bringing us something wonderfully unexpected, even if it's subtle...let Nicorette go where it needs to...and where you need it to go...ah, to marry the two!  Barbara, your work was so sumptuous last class, I know you'll make EXHALE the kind of audio book selection we'd want to hear in our cars!  Brenda, your mix of sunnyness and "clever-tude" should make the Creamette rap something quite endearing....see, you all have great reputations, already!!!

  4.  We'll be considering more about "The Soul of the Voice," care of the voice and even look at a politcal spot...
so all in all, lots to do in this last class, leading to your private lessons!

I began this entry laughing but end on a poignant note...I will never forget you three special women...how individually and collectively, you "healed" our last forum by the power of Unconditional Love for your work, each other, and me, your... um, "impetuous" teacher!!  As a gift, may I leave you with one of my favorite "ancient" poems...surprisingly, it inspired my concept for "The Soul of the Voice"...I think you'll see the unusual correlation.

I send Unconditional Love back to you dear people,

Robert

Good Jesus,
the water of your teaching
flows in silence.
Your gospel
is not poured into our ears
by an eloquent tongue,
but is breathed into our hearts
by your sweet spirit.
Your voice never strains nor shouts.
You do not force us to hear you.
You ask only
that we open our hearts to you,
and in tranquility your love enters our soul.

__Aelred of Rievaulx (c.1110-1167)

For April 25:  In our last class it was facinating to see how one's individual sense of humor can shape their work...being true to your essence while communicating the ad team's intent for a comedic spot is all (and a lot!) you can do...when you've done your best, it makes the casting of a commercial a truly subjective experience for all!
In other words, post-audition there's none of that riveting actor's guilt...instead it's, "Hey, I pulled out the stops...if I don't book this one, they'll remember my great work so I'll get happily invited to the next audition!"  Also, it was interesting to see how our Shiseido "fembot" took on a personality of her own based on the personality traits and copy interpretations of the voice-actor.  So to April and Barbara, your hard work made for striking artistic growth!!  And Brenda, you'll jump back in upon your return next week!  For homework:

l.  We had a lovely presentation about the Shurtleff book from April last class.  Barbara will bring something in she particularly likes from Shurtleff next class, April 28.  (Then, Brenda for the next class).

2.  PRACTICE-- Look at the comedy of Buckley's Mixture  juxtaposed with the serious nature of the Drug-Free America spot and then the easy-speak of the wonderfully written Florida Blue Cross.  Filter these three through the Voice-ACTions method and do 2 or 3 "home takes" of each...see what YOU can bring to them.

3.  Next class features (in Part I) the key to on-camera commercials and their application to "reality" voice-overs...the spot for Excederin (which you'll get & do in class) is a great example.  In Part II we'll learn the art of duets courtesy of Lucille Ball (who better!) and have some fun with Travel.com....you get to do some characters here, too...extra-fun!!

In closing, amidst your overall busy schedules,  I wish you a productive week with a l'il Shurtleff, some homework practice plus active TV/radio viewing/listening somewhere in the mix.  Take care of those "chords," too!  Indeed, it was Lucy who told her students, "If there's a job to be done, you give it to the busiest man!"...I'll leave you to think about that one!

With my prayers and respect for each of you,

Robert

For April 18:  Thanks for "tuning in," great ladies!  May I warmly call your winning group "The Saturday Dreamgirls"...dedicated to your individual and collective open hearts and convicted spirits.  The "Soul of the Voice Awards" of the week are as follows:  to April, the "You Can Break Our Hearts" with your sensitive, astute voice-acting Award, to Brenda, the "Wow, You Bravely Found Another Vocal Dimension" amazing voice-acting Award, To Barbara, the "We Love When You Put the Dramatic License In Your Work" (we wanna hear more!) voice-acting Award...Bravas & Kudos to all!!!

Here are your assignments as we prepare to meet for Class Two:

l.  Carefully review the Comp. Voice-ACTions method and take special note of A.--embracing the natural pauses and flow of normal speech in your voice-acting work and B.--remember to pass the message over to one and only one person (it makes for great mic techniqe, as we heard, too).....

2.  Keep reading the Shurtleff book and bring something in to talk about.

3.  In part one of our next class we'll be playing "The Radio Game" as an improv exercise and then "Comedy Club"...just "come as you are" for this good fun...we'll apply the latter to our comedic brainstorm read for Mondavi Wines.

4.  In part two, I'm gonna be strict...so prep your homework every which way...lots of layers....
April, indeed, Shiseido is yours (be creative/unique)...Brenda, you can choose either Pepsi (edgy/up-beat!) or Shiseido and Barbara, the Script 1 for Fidelity Income Advantage featuring Richard & Nancy is yours...HINT:  Who do you know in your personl life that can be Rich & Nancy...why do they touch you...then, touch us!

5.  Keep watching & listening to the media and keep your finger on the pulse of pop culture...when you're part of the biz your MUST be an ACTIVE viewer/listener on a daily basis...make a little time for this!

Trust your "still small voice"...never apologize for your instincts...liking yourself is selfless so you can easily fulfil the industry's needs and garner a great reputation as a "big voice!!"...you are all on your way....

When in doubt, sing, pray or do a voice-over!!!

Kindest Regards,

 Robert

P.S.  Your Time Capsules were intriguing...won't forget your wishes!
